Cool mornings

I awoke to a cool breeze coming in the window – a crisp fall-like morning today! 60 degrees, cloudy, rainy on and off.

My friend texted at 7am asking about our tenatively planned run – I said yes as long as it’s not raining, and it wasn’t at the moment, so we hit the pavement at 7:30am. Did a nice 3 miles in the cool air.

Def a scarf and cardigan day!  {Yayy fall!!! :) }

Now having oats and coffee – OIAJ with half a banana, soy milk, PB and Kashi Go Lean for crunch. Coffee on the side

Now I’m showered and ready for the day:

– class 10-11:30
– reading, finsihing a response due at 5pm
– interview prepping (eek)
– internship interview at 3:30
– meeting at 6pm
– class 6:30-9:30

Oh boy! Gonna be a long one today.

Labor Day Weekend

Well it’s been a flurry of a few days! Yesterday I went for an early morning run with Melissa. We covered about miles! Great way to start a Friday, and good to get into a running groove here in New Haven right off the bat. (I’ve also got that 10k fast-approaching on 9/18!)Breakfast was more OIAJ of course. With banana and PB. Mmm.

I then worked on our sunny porch and did some course applications and had lunch. The afternoon consisted of a failed meeting with my advisor (rrg) and a student group fair. I then drove (not biked, ops) over to Edge of the Woods, a neat little grocery store across town. It reminded me a miniature Whole Foods – pricey, but full of awesome natural foods. I picked up supplies to cook Jeff a yummy stir fry. I biked to his place and found him walking his roommates’ dog, Captain Wilson!

I got a new sort of tofu, sprouted! I think it actually ended up giving me a huge stomach ache. Maybe it was just too much soy in general. We had some white wine, too. Just good ol’ 3 buck chuck. Nuthin special, but tastes good on a summer evening. After eating we headed to my school’s first TGIF! (Thank God I’m a Forester!!) The theme was endless summer, so people were decked out in summer gear, bathing suits, and hawaiin themed clothes. There were kiddy pools and floaties! It was a lot of fun and everyone was really excited to be back and hanging out. It was also a beautiful night out! We caught up with people and headed inside for the dance party later in the evening. Fun times!

Today has been fun too – kicked off with an egg on toast with a side of local blueberries, mm. Coffee on the side, of course. I then headed to the farmer’s market with my housemates. It’s such a great Saturday morning activity – walk around in the fall sunshine, run into lots of people to chat with, and pick up locally grown tasty produce! We headed back in time to get ready for a cookout! We had a lovely cookout in the park down the street for our mentees (new first years we’re assigned to to help out with course selections, and just to be a buddy to). It was a fun time and we all sorts of yummy food – veggie burgers, potato salad, corn on the cob, chips, watermelon, mm!

I fit in a run today with Melissa again and we did our same course, this time about 5 miles. I followed it up with 3 sets of 20 leaning leg lunges, 30 tricep dips, and 2 sets of 10 push ups. Woo woo!

Now I’m getting ready for a little girls’ night action — going out for Mexican and margaritas!! :)

Breakfasts on the Porch

This morning I tried to sleep in since I knew I’ve got a slew of dawn-rising mornings coming up in our tent! But, I was awake and up around 8am. Ah well, I felt great so I hit the pavement for a nice run and did 4.72 miles. It was a nice cool 64 degrees.

Felt good and I chugged along at about a 10 minute mile which, considering all the hills, is quite alright. It was nice to have company on the run too – lots of other runners out bright and early on this lovely Saturday morning! I came home and did

1 set of abs with some other abs moves
– 10 push ups on my knees
– stretch

Half a Shower (cuz there’ll be more sweating later on!) and breakfast:

Oats with soymilk, topped with blueberries, half a small banana slices, honey from yesterday’s market, and home-made granola!  It was quite the rockstar bowl. Side of french press coffee.

I love eating out on our back porch. My mom has it decorated with plants and doodads and it’s a great sunny start to the day. Now I’m off to meet my dad for a bike ride! :) Happy Saturday everyone!

Day at the Beach, Flapjacks, and French Press

Yesterday was a day at the beach! Mom and I drove down equipped with coffees. We arrived at the beach and had to wait in line to park. I snacked on a peach and some pretzel slims. You know you’re on the cape when there are hydrangeas everywhere! It was a perfect day on the beach and I had a blast playing with my little cousins who are 6 and 2!  I also enjoyed some Fage yogurt topped with flax seed. I also snacked on strawberries and blueberrie, as well as TWO of my home-made granola bars – I had to have one of each! ;) I had a banana bread oat bite and an oatmeal snack bar. Kind of a hodgepodge lunch eaten throughout the afternoon, but it worked! These kiddoes were so cute! 

There was also a dog, Phoebe! 
We headed back from the beach around 5 and showered up and headed out to dinner at one of our favorite places, the Marsh Side.  We started with some pinot grigio. 
I had a big greek salad for dinner, and 2 pieces of bread from the bread basket. Then, ice cream! My favorite ice cream place of all time, and I got grasshopper (mint ice cream mixed with oreo hunks!) MMMmm soo good.  Happy girl with ice cream:As for this morning…

I started the day with a quick 3 mile run. I was planning to do interval sprints but just wasn’t feelin it. It was pretty warm and sunny so I just plugged along on my flat 3 mile route. Started at 8:46am, ended at 9:17am. I then banged out:

– stretching
– 3 sets of 15 reps of tricep over-the-head lifts, 12 pound weight
– 3 sets of 20 reps of bicep curls, 10 pound weights each arm
– 30 push ups on my knees

All the while I was on and off hold with my school health insurance – not fun! But made the weight-lifting seem quicker.  After the workout and shower it was time for….. FLAP JACKS AND FRENCH PRESS!!! Remember how I got a delivery? It was time to make use of it! I whipped up some flapjacks and added to the mix: blueberries, walnuts, and some of the final sprinkles of my Cville Cluster Granola (this addition totally inspired by Kath in this post)

I also cooked up a few morning star faux sausages (love these!). The flap jacks (why is it waaay more fun to call them flapjacks vs. pancakes?! It’s so rustic and outdoorsy sounding) came out awesome, and I topped my first one with syrup and the next with raspberry jam.



I also used the french press! The coffee came out good, but mom and I have to admit, it’s not anything super amazing. I wonder if it’s the coffee we used that wasn’t super amazing? Not sure. But it was good!
I’ve got a to-do list to tackle today!

Hometown visit

Good morning, Newton!

I woke up to a sunny, cool day in New England (<3). I love sleeping with my windows open – something I couldn’t do all summer long in DC. I got up and hit the pavement for my first run here at 9am. It seemed cool out but once I got going it quickly felt hot. I guess it was 73 and humid, so not exactly cool. I was excited and determined to do my old 5 mile route here, a route i haven’t been in shape enough to run since LAST JUNE! wow. I was excited to see how my body did. Well, I survived. I had forgotten how challenging HILLS can be!! My routes all summer in DC have been long but really, really FLAT. So these hills really kicked my butt, but, I didn’t give up, and never stopped or walked! SUCCESS! (shoulda brought water though! lesson learned) I came back hot, red, and sweaty, but happy I did the 5 miles. I then kicked it further and did Audrina’s ab workout twice (I decided this week is ab week, like shark week, only less awesome) and 20 push ups on my knees. Followed by lots of stretching — I’m still really sore from Sunday’s lunges, maybe that’s why the run was so tough too.

I then had a conference call with my internship to hear my fellow interns’ presentations. While on the call I had 2 cups of coffee, followed by oatmeal and bran! Made by momma. I topped it with blueberries, walnuts pieces, dried cranberries, and almond milk. Yum!

It’s nice to be at home for a few days. Short visit, but nice. Then it’s off on a few end-of-summer trips before school starts at the end of August. Hoping to see a few friends while I’m here in my home town :)

Oh and about that big zappos box that I never revealed its contents… well, here’s what was inside!

I kinda neglected posting it because I ended up returning the hat :( It was just too big and too expensive, AND, because my lovely friend found me an even better hat! I really wanted a white one and she happen to be at Banana Republic and she found me the perfect one, and for half the price of the one I had ordered from Zappos, so it’s a keeper! I’ll be sporting this on our trip to Cancun in less than two weeks! :)

Last lunch, Gelato, Run!

My last lunch outside with the fellow interns was a big ol’ veggie bowl. Trying to empty my freezer and eat lots of frozen veggies! I overstocked. This guy was full of: broccoli, green beans, sprinkle of corn/soybean medley, big hunks of marinated tempeh for protein, and topped with tomatoes, which were picked fresh from the tomatoes plants in Jeff’s back yard! I had planted tomato plants waay back in May and stuck them at Jeff’s for the summer. Glad I got to reap the fruits of my labor! They were so tasty and fresh. It was a great veggie bowl, all topped with soy sauce for flavor.

I wrapped up some things, cleared off my desk, and then our division director took two of us out for gelato! I think I’ve only had gelato like once or twice in my life, so this was extra special. I got a tiny dish of mint chocolate chip. It was super bright green (oober artificially colored?) and was creamy and good, but I think I could tell is artificially flavored. This is not my photo, but it looked like this.

Time to say good bye to everyone and my internship! …

After all the good byes and desk-clearing and all that… I came home, had a spoonful of Almond butter, and I headed home and did a big run! 6.18 miles in 1 hour 2 minutes.I’m loving this iPhone app! Still loving how the little man in my phone tells me what mile I’m at (logyourrun free iphone app) I’m not yet ready to make the big purchase that has been bopping around the blog work lately (though I’m DYING FOR ONE OF THESE!!!!) And apparently it’s on sale right now on Amazon … early Christmas gift? Anyone? HINT HINT?!?! It would certainly help me track my runs and progress much more accurately..

Anyway… I had a great run, it wasn’t amazing, not miserable, just good. There was a breeze the whole way so despite it being 86 degrees out it didn’t feel so bad. I did my usual path and plodded along. I spaced out a good amount of it thinking about the end of my internship, so that made the time go faster. Some of the views on my walk back:I’m going to miss my DC runs! Except definitely won’t miss the HEAT. I also almost lost my camel back strap today, twice! Grrr something is up with it – either way, I won’t be needing to run with it as much back in New England due to cooler temps, so no worries. Now I’m showered and dressed, and off to CELEBRATE finishing my internship with MOM!!! :)

Second to Last Day!

I can’t believe it’s my second to last day interning! Today is my last day with my supervisor and my office mate, as they are both out tomorrow. Sad! How quickly time goes.

I decided to start off the day with a morning run (finally). I was determined to do it, and have realized that’s the only way I acutally end up doing morning execercise – if I’m determined and have made up my mind to do it. I even dreamt about missing my alarm and being bummed about missing my run!

I slipped quietly out of the apt and was dressed and hitting the pavement by 6:47am. It was fairly cool out (77) but really humid. As I got deeper into the trail it got even more humid due to all the vegetation! But it was a great run and I was surrounded by other runners and bikers commuting to work in the city. My music and updated running playlist kept me going as did my camel back. A sweet 5.3 miles in about 53 minutes. Left me sweaty and happy :)

Back at the apt I got ready and break-fasted: 1 egg white, pepper strips, and nutritional yeast, look familiar? Coffee w/ almond milk on the side. Can you tell I’m outta fresh fruit in the house?

On the books today: meeting, meeting, goodbye lunch for me! :), meeting, coffee meeting, good byes :-(, then fun with mom after work!

Heavenly running in the Haven

It’s funny being back in New Haven! I woke up with Jeff as he headed off to work. I started my day with a big bowl of CEREAL! Something I don’t usually eat. This stuff was delicious! Vanilla almond flakes of some sort? I topped it off with some fresh strawberries and almond milk. Gotta say 2g of protein per serving is really weak, compared to my usual eggs or oatmeal breakfast. But, it’s a good pre-run breakfast, full o’ carbs. Cereal is one of those things I have trouble stopping eating – I def took two extra handfuls after I finished my bowl. Maybe that’s why I don’t keep the stuff around ;) Natural lighting in Jeff’s room leaves something to be desired…I then bopped around his apartment for a while, caught up on NPR and blogs, digested, ironed a skirt, and then got ready for a run. I was super excited to know I’d be running in 73 degree weather (just checked the DC weather, and right now it’s 96 degrees!! bahh!! so glad I’m not there for that) Here’s me being excited:I took off on a 5ish mile route I had mapped out. I chose a scenic route, meaning I would run by some of my favorite new haven spots to check up on things! It’s been a few months and I was excited to see what had changed. Ran by: my house, my favorite street, all the markets, downtown, the Green, etc. Everything seems to be in order, just the way I left it, minus some new pavement, horray, and looks like a sweet bakery is going in downtown, right next to my office — SCORE!! It was a muggy rain with misty rain occasionally, but cool as a cucumber! I stopped at 5 miles, finished in about 47 minutes, not bad! A quick clip for me at least. I then treated myself to a big iced coffee at Willoughbys and they even had SOY MILK, wow! Now time to shower up and meet a friend for lunch and help her move some stuff to her new apt. Then some errands and then fun time! C ya

Napping and Running, not simultaneously

Today really flew by – lots of meetings and work. My supervisor took me to lunch at the salad bar place and I made a massive salad. It contained: lettuce, corn mix, broccoli, 3 bean mix, artichokes, snow peas, tofu chunks, a few beets, and fruit on the side. Wow! I didn’t realize I was that hungry. I also had an honest tea. I saved my fruit for an afternoon snack. Have I mentioned how much I love my travel mug? I’ve had it for about 9 months and it is so trusty and NEVER leaks. It’s miraculous. This is how I bring my coffee to work every day. After a meeting ended at 4:15 I felt super tired and not great. I’ve been nervous about catching the yucky cold bug that half of my office had. I decided to high tail it outta the office to go collapse for a nap in bed. I of course left without my keys and had to spend 15 minutes going back, calling a coworker, and retrieving them. Grr, I was so tired I couldn’t even think!

I came home and passed out for about 40 minutes, and even dreamt. I woke up a bit groggy, but feeling better and ready for a run. I was almost antsy because … it was only 79 degrees out!!! INSANELY cool!!!! I simply could not pass up an opportunity to run outside. I had a few clusters of cville granola and a spoonful of almond butter to gear up and wake up. I realized it has been over 2 weeks since my last outdoor run! That’s nuts. I really have been missing it, hardcore. I figured I would do 3-4 miles since I wasn’t sure how I was feeling and since it’d be so long. Butttttt, once I hit that trail I got so excited! Running felt so good. When Party Rock came on my iPhone, I literally almost started skipping. I know, dork alert here. It was just perfect weather, a bit muggy, but not bad, kinda cloudy, and I loved seeing the other runners and bikers pass by enjoying the temporary coolish weather too. Before I knew it I was almost at the bridge, the 3 mile marker. Looked like I was going to do 6 miles to get back home. I didn’t even really feel tired as I approached home at 6 miles, it was so great! I think the best runs are when the miles just fly by. I came home and showered, and made up this beauty of a bowl! In the mix: 1c greek yogurt, 1 tbsp PB, raspberries, 1/2 small banana, and cville cluster granola. So good! and Filling.

Ok now that I’ve procrastinated for a few hours … I need to practice this presentation!!

Fruit, fruit, fruit

Around 11am I got suuper hungry (I’m on a hungry streak?!) So I had this beauty of a lil peach. Perfectly ripe.Lunch was eaten before it was photographed, but it was a home-made spinach/romaine salad salad with carrots, cucmbers, peas, and two egg whites. Yum. But didn’t quite fill me up. Good thing there was a tonn of food left over from a work meeting that we got dibs on. I loaded up on a giant bowl of fruit.I gave the cookie to my office mate :) At this point I think I was od’d on fruit for the day! I headed home and got completely soaked in a big rain storm — stupidly didn’t bring my umbrella today :( I ran home and changed, got my umbrella, and headed over to a special treat to myself – a mani/pedi! I had bought a great groupon-like deal and finally made use of it. I picked a super NEON color for my toes, and a nice summer pastel for the fingers. I came home and then cleaned for an hour – apt is sparkling (well as sparkling as it can be). Bad timing I know, I would have much preferred to first clean, workout, and THEN get my nails did, but, alas, there was only one appointment left. After cleaning and doing lots of laundry I headed over to the gym and did:

– 60 minutes on the treadmill: 20 mines with 8 1-minute sprints interspersed, about 10 mins uphill walking, and 30 mins running
– arm weight training
– too tired to do abs! stretch

I came home and chugged a protein shake of soy milk and protein powder and then tossed together some dinner. I was hungry, of course, and broke into some black beans and turned it into a big veggie bean bowl, topped with TJ’s Soyaki sauce. Perfecto, with bubbles on the side. Followed by a spoonful of PB. Bunch of things to do cuz …. JEFF comes to visit tomorrow night!! YAYYY!!!!!!!!
