Running and Brunching

This happened at 9am this morning:

Sweaty 5 mile run! In 50 minutes, wahhooo!! Hot, like running in the Amazon rainforest (haven’t run there, but I have hiked, walked, and boated there, so can imagine how running would be – HOT and SWEATY!)

Then this:

Awesome brunch at Founding Farmers. Egg white omlette with veggies and cheddar, home-made english muffin with their homemade jam, side of fresh fruit, half of the taters and leeks shared with dad, and a delicious cucmber cranberry sparklet – which inspired us to make our own! more on that juicing adventure later :)

Followed by more fun – more to come later!

Ginormous Salad

We went out to lunch today to a place with a giiannt hot and cold salad bar. It was awesome! My salad looked a bit like this, but was composed of: lettuce mix, black beans and corn, asparagus sprigs, broccoli florets, water chestnuts, a few baby corn, 1 hard boiled egg, and forgot to put on dressing but all the toppings made up for it.

On the side I had a big bowl of fruit – pineapple slices, strawberries, and orange and kiwi slices.

It was a giant plate of veggies and fruits, with hopefully just enough protein from the beans and egg. Yumm! Plus a diet coke for the afternoon – trying to limit my DCs to 2x a week, cuz I know they’re just not good for you! Cranking out work now.

It’s Friday, Friday

My alarm went off at 6:30 this morning and I felt pretty rested. My first thought was that it was Friday (hooray!) and the second thought that entered my mind was the Friday Song. Oh boy. After trying to get the song outta my head I got up and got ready for the day. I wanted a light bfast today (even though I really wanted more overnight oats) because I know my supervisor is taking me out to lunch (hopefully chop’t salads) and because I know I’m going out to dinner with my dad later, so I figured start it off light! The usual – two egg whites (one real, one from a carton), peppers, turmeric and nutritional yeast. Coffee and cinnamon.

Time for work, Happy Friday!!

Happy Hour, Happy Gym

Today chugged along pretty smoothly and I realized I only have about 2 weeks to finish all of my research at my internship, because present my work on July 26th — AHH!!!!! I really need to buckle down, focus, and crank out some seriously good work, and asap! I think the pressure will help :) I had packed a veggie laden lunch today but my boss messaged me asking how I would feel about a salad. How do I feel about free salads? Fantastic! I tucked my lunch in the fridge and we ventured over to get salads. This time I asked for no feta cheese, and dressing on the side. Good decisions. And I ditched the free slices of bread that came with it. Just don’t need it! And who knows what their bread was made of, I’m guessing not whole grains…It was quite tasty and full of the veg I craved – cucumbers, tomatoes, and red peppers, and probably about 12 too many kalamata olives, but they were so tasty! I also passed up some leftover red velvet cake someone brought into the office, go me! I find it helpful to think about how I’ll feel after I indulge in something. If I can foresee that it won’t be positive feelings, then I try not to do it. I had one of the gorgeous peaches I bought at the farmers’ market yesterday. It was just perfectly ripe! mmm juicy. After work we had a happy hour scheduled with an appointee at the agency. I was hoping for just a glass of wine, but of course we ordered pizza. I had one super cheesy slice and my one glass of wine. Yum! I then came home around 7 and got myself straight over to the gym. Had I drank a second glass of wine I definitely would not have made it.. good thing for limits. At the gym I did:

— 30 mins on the StairMaster
— arm strength training
— 25 minutes on the elliptical
— leg strength training

I then headed home and mixed up a protein shake and stretched out. After showering I decided I should have a bit more of a substantial dinner, even though that pizza slice and wine were sort of dinner (?). So I decided to heat up my abandoned lunch. Solid bowl of frozen veg, a sprinkle of leftover lentils, one egg white, and nurtitional yeast and soy sauce.

It did the trick. Getting things ready for tomorrow, ordering new running socks, and chatting with Jeffers. G night!

Upping the miles, upping the veggies

Just got back from a great run with Melissa! I was worried I’d be sluggish and might not even be able to do the whole 7 miles, but, once we got truckin I felt good and more excited about the run. I took an aleve before heading out, in hopes to get rid of my headache I’d had throughout the afternoon, and figured it wouldn’t hurt with any soreness I might have after the run.  Today’s run was the longest run I’ve evern run outdoors! One time last June I ran 8 miles on a treadmill, but that doesn’t really count (no elevation whatsoever). So I’m pretty psyched that this is my longest on record :) Melissa and I talked lots of running talk, from socks, to shoes, to goo, to protein recovery. I realized that since I’m upping the miles so much I need to be more aware of recovery foods, protein after runs, etc. So right when we got back I whipped up a protein shake – 4 oz almond milk, 4 oz water, and 1 scoop of vanilla vegan powder. Ends up being about 90 calories and 13 g protein. After rinsing off and stretching (other way around) I cooked up some dinner – simple veggies with soy sauce and two egg whites. Perfecto. I’m pretty beat from the run – organizing some things here, video chatting with Jeffy, then an early bedtime. G night!

Back to work, Back to wholesome foods

Back to the internship today. I was busy with meetings a lot of the day and got a fair amount done, too. Started off with forgetting to photograph everything! Had the usual coffee and egg whites and peppers for bfast with nutritional yeast and turmeric, lunch was a big bowl of broccoli, carrots, and lentils, afternoon snack:

A sliced apple with cinnamon.

On the way home I walked through the farmer’s market trying to keep in mind that I shouldn’t buy too much tasty-looking produce since my dad is coming this weekend and as of right now, our plans include a fair amount of eating out, so don’t want to stock up on things and have them go bad. I did know that I desperately needed fresh fruit! I’ve got plenty of frozen veggies and canned beans to last me quite a while, but fresh fruit – no replacement there! I picked up two peaches, one nectarine, and one tomato, they were beauties! And nestled safely into my purse. Now I’m gearing up for a long run with Melissa, so I just had a pre-run snack. Hoping it settles well (still 45 mins til we’re moving, so should be ok!) Celery stalk with 1 tbsp of peanut butter. Hit the spot.

Catch ya later.

Last day in New England

Today is my last day of my visit here in Boston :( I got up with Jeff at 6am to send him off with breakfast before he drove back to New Haven to work today. I then crawled back into bed for a few more hours of sleep. Now it’s a day of packing up, laundry-ing, and hopefully a little fun. Started off with a high protein breakfast (gotta get back on track!) Eggs and an english muffin, spinach, little OJ, and coffee. I was hoping for a run, but it’s close to 90 degrees here! Too hot.

Flight’s at 7pm, Catch you later!

Let the fun begin!

Happy Vacation! I’m so excited I have the next 5 days off from my internship and get to take a trip home to visit! Haven’t been home since I started here at the end of May, and I’m looking forward to hanging out with my parents, brother, boyfriend, and friends! I was sooo tired last night after that 6 mi run that I konked out and slept til 10am. It was glorious.  I woke up to some eggs, peppers, turmeric, and coffee with cinnamon.Checked a few things off my to-do list:

clean bathroom
clean kitchen
take out trash and recyclables
put laundry away
finish packing
I then hopped over to the gym for a quick workout:
–15 mins on the Stairmaster
–15 mins on the elliptical
–arm workout (glad I got my 3 sessions in, like I had planned on Sunday!)

I scooted home and made some JUICE! Haven’t used the juicer since I moved to DC and it was about time! It’s a beautiful day here too so seemed appropriate to have some super fresh juice after a good workout and go sit in the sun.

Juice was made of:It’s also good timing cuz I wanted to clear out the fridge of any fresh items that might go bad while I’m away til Tuesday night. (cucumber, celery stalks, carrots, apple, lemon)

It turned out delicious!

I was all excited to go lay by my building’s pool (I’ve only used it twice, ah!) and headed down with juice and book in hand, but found the pool didn’t open til 3 today! Boooo. I was determined to get some sunshine and juice time, so I went and sat just outside my building on a patch of grass. It was a bit awkward since I was also determined to wear a bikini. Whatevs, ppl can deal, right? ;) I was literally laying next to cars.outdoor juice :) Not quite the serene atmosphere I was imagining by the pool .. oh well. I came back after 45 mins (don’t want too much sun, it is awful for you, I know). I had a cottage cheese snack
And now it’s time to shower, finish packing, and get on the metro to the airport! Catch you later.

6.3 mile therapy

My day in photos:

Breakfast: The usual. Plus coffee & cinnamon.

I walked to work this morning! 1.7 miles, 30 minutes. Easiest route happens to be by the White House. G’morning Barry! (apparently Michelle calls him that?) New goal: walk to or from work at least once per week.

Lunch:kale, cauliflower, carrot w/nutritional yeast 1/2 eaten here, plus a spoonful of rice pudding. Mm.

We ate at the FolkLife Festival on the Mall – fun event!

Afternoon bubbles.

Check out those bubbs.

Pre-run snack: (recycled photo), this was a bad choice – schluggled around in the my stomach during the run.

Gearing up for a 5 mile (turned 6.3 mile) run!

Recovery Dinner: broc and 1.5c veggie bean chili. Mm.

And now.. packing, organizing, and getting excited to fly to Boston tomorrow!

Wednesday, almost my Friday

Happy Wednesday! Since tomorrow is my Friday, it’s almost the weekend! Today has been a fun day so far. Started off with two egg whites and turmeric, with a cup of raspberry tea.

Skipped the veg with breakfast today because I thought I was going to Chop’t with my supervisor today for lunch and I figured it would be laden with veggies. On my way into the office this morning he texted me saying to meet him and one of our coworkers at sbux. In addition to my travel mug full of coffee, I had a grande black coffee with them and enjoyed chatting for about an hour in the coffee shop – not a bad way to start the day! And highly caffeinated.

Back at the office we got an email saying a coworker had brought in a whole bunch of leftovers from a cookout and that us (unpaid) interns should eat them all up! My supervisor said we might as well take advantage of this rather than head to chop’t (I was a little bummed, as I was excited about trying out the popular chop’t salads I’ve heard about, and because cook-out fair is often not so vegetarian friendly.. but it all worked out well) I made a nice high-protein (but sadly a bit low on veg) plate.

vegetarian baked beans (I double checked), pile of lettuce, pile of tomatoes, and hidden under there is a black bean burger which was quite tasty. ketchup and mustard, too. I steered clear of the carb and mayo-laden potato salad, white hamburger buns, and cole slaw. Not a bad lunch, and free :) I find it can be really challenging to eat healthy when unexpected meals come up, but this one worked out well.

We just got an email about an “urgent birthday celebration at FroZenYo” – it was one of the interns birthdays on Monday but no one knew! Sounds like we’re going to have a little field trip celebration this afternoon – I’ll need to choose my froyo carefully! C ya later.
